Please reject the maps which Commissioners Barnett and Kottwitz are attempting to use to bypass the majority of the commission. Please follow the maps submitted by your staff.

Comment:

I am very concerned to hear that Republican Legislative Redistricting Commissioners Hunter Barnett and Aislinn Kottwitz have been working with non-disclosed and unregistered GOP lobbyists to push through a last-minute set of maps to fundamentally change Colorado’s State House and Senate districts in an unwarranted attempt to guarantee Republican control over the state legislature for the next decade. These maps are completely contrary to the intent of the voters who passed the redistricting measures and to the criteria spelled out in the Colorado Constitution. These Commissioners are shamefully attempting to make a travesty of everything the Independent Redistricting Commissions were intended to do. I urge the Commission to reject the maps being pushed by Commissioners Barnett and Kottwitz and instead support the maps drawn by nonpartisan staff. I am also requesting that an investigation be completed regarding these lobbyists’ interference in what is supposed to be a non-partisan effort to fairly draw competitive districts that respect the Voting Rights Act and meet the constitutional requirements set forth for the Redistricting Commission members. I would also like the collusion of Commissioners Barnett and Kottwitz with these operatives to be investigated.

Comment:

The citizens of Colorado voted to implement a nonpartisan legislative and congressional redistricting process. The commission worked hard to develop new maps. When they could not agree, the nonpartisan, neutral redistricting staff submitted a final set of legislative maps to them. This is precisely as the voters intended. Now two of the redistricting commission members are pushing their own set of maps. I strongly urge you to reject these maps being pushed by Commissioners Barnett and Kottwitz and support the maps drawn by nonpartisan staff. To accept them will subvert the will of the people. Thank you.

Comment:

I have been told that two Redistricting Commissioners (Barnett and Kottwitz) are submitting a last-minute redistricting proposal. This proposal was not agreed upon by the duly appointed Redistricting Commission as a whole. As a Colorado voter, I voted for a nonpartisan redistricting process precisely to avoid this type of shenanigans. Please disregard the proposal from Mr. Barnett and Ms. Kottwitz. It is an affront to the democratic process that we all hold so dear. Thank you.

Comment:

The nonpartisan commission set up to determine the districting for the state of Colorado was formed to represent everyone equally and fairly, and to AVOID attempts at gerrymandering. The neutral commission as a whole has been working for months to make certain that the redrawn maps were fair and evenly represented. It has come out that GOP members on the commission (Hunter and Kottwitz) have been working on the side with undisclosed lobbyists who are trying to push through a last-minute set of maps that have not had the FULL COMMISSION REVIEW and public input, as has been defined for the redistricting commission. If this is allowed, the time and effort spent the past many months was a complete farce and wasted funding, and the gerrymandering will continue. Elections can be fair by allowing every vote to count, and NOT drawing maps to skew votes one way or the other. It is what we all want and wish for in a fair and open democracy. Thank you for your consideration. P.S. The answer to this is to REJECT any last-minute maps presented by a lobbying group or individual commissioners that have not been subject to the required review by the whole, and ACCEPT the last FINAL set of maps that were presented BY THE COMMISSION.

Comment:

The latest attempts to subvert the mission of the redistricting commission must be stopped. I strongly support the maps generated by the nonpartisan staff. The maps introduced by commissioners Barnett and Kottwitz are exactly the kind of maps we don't want. It is that type of gerrymandering those of us voted to create the redistricting commission wanted to prevent. I strongly urge that those maps as submitted by Commissioners Barnett and Kottwitz be firmly rejected.
