I have donated to President Obama's 2012 campaign and Joe Biden's 2020 campaign.
I am on the board of the Latino Task Force of Boulder County, I volunteer for Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights, and have volunteered for the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, Padres y Jovenes Unidos, ACLU Colorado, and Servicios de la Raza.
My experience representing and advocating for groups and organizations in Colorado relates to empowering young people, immigrants, and black, brown, indigenous, people of color to self-advocate, to have autonomy, combat systemic oppression, and connect them with opportunities and resources.
I want to serve on the commission because as a woman of color, I can speak on personal experience on how redistricting decisions can have a direct impact on diverse communities. This work needs to include a diverse pool of decision makers who can help inform the most equitable outcomes for all Coloradoans, including the most marginalized and underrepresented - and I think my experience working in advocacy and justice work can support that goal.
In order to promote consensus, I plan to contribute to creating agreement among the commissioners by presenting respect towards all, welcoming the input of others, and representing understanding while contributing my intersectional knowledge. I believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinions that are formed from lived experiences and no one can negate that; and to reach a solution, it is important to remain fair and impartial so that decisions and outcomes that are established benefit the community at-large regardless of our personal belief because this process isn't about individual persons but building equity amongst communities.
Before making decisions, especially those which can be mixed with differing opinions, I ensure that I gather all factual information and analyze all implications. I believe in having healthy discourse to inform the problem-solving process because no two people are the same and their lived experiences influence different ways in which to tackle a given problem. I have developed skills around facilitating talking circles with differing opinions where it is most important to clearly name logic and honor and respect each other and be open to learning new information to be able to reason through a problem from different angles.
