Basically, I grew up believing in 'one person, one vote' as a basis of our country's liberty and promise. I marched for civil rights in the 1960s; worked as a woman to advance in the 1970s and 1980s, and continue to work towards ensuring that promise for my grandchildren and future generations...and the commission has this same responsibility.

Statement on Working with Consensus

I began my career as an employment counselor, learning to listen to people looking for work and to their potential employers. Working at CDOT, I needed to help minority and woman owned businesses become part of a white-male dominated industry, which required listening to parties on all sides and help them to find commonalities. Now, as Clerk of Boulder Meeting of Friends, it is my job to listen to the entire Meeting in our business sessions and help us come to unity (or consensus)...because that is how we have traditionally made decisions since the 1600s. Sometimes, consensus takes a lot of time, and it invariably is the best way to go, because we've already handled the second-guessing BEFORE the decision! I tend to look at all sides and as much info as I can get before making a decision. II listen for the emotion as well as the facts...because emotions can push behavior, which is another kind of fact that it's important to take into consideration. I have a reputation for being fair.

Relevant Analytic Skills for Commission

My degrees demonstrate analytical skills. My experience in civil rights and religious communities demonstrates that I bring listening skills, thought and caring towards group solutions.
